Global Mobility: The Way Forward?

Over the last twenty years, transport and technology have advanced to such a degree that living in a different country no longer means leaving everyone and everything you know behind; to the point that immigrating to another country to work has become a realistic and even desirable option for many people.

The world is becoming more and more interconnected, and with it, the workforce is changing; permanently. The idea of being able to move halfway across the world for work was a terrifying notion even half a century ago, but now it is not only conceivable, but fully doable. You can move to a different continent and still be able to keep your family close to you – be it physically relocating with you or keeping connected through technology, and for that reason, global mobility is becoming increasingly important.

The term ‘global mobility’ refers specifically to the ability of employees or, indeed, entire workforces to move from one country to another as their needs change and be able to succeed with little disruption to their lives.

As times change, it is becoming more desirable and even necessary for companies to adjust to keep up with the competition, and to flourish you must be forward-thinking. Forward-thinking, in this case, means a company must be able to support global expansion with its own global mobility if it expects to keep up with or outdo the competition.

To achieve full global mobility, a multinational company has many things to consider, such as Visas, immigration law, culture acclimation, and the logistics of relocating an employee and, depending on circumstance, their family.

There are also smaller, equally important things to consider you might gloss over at first: are you sending an employee in a same-sex marriage to somewhere where their marriage isn’t recognised, or where it’s illegal, even punishable? Are you considering sending an employee with a chronic illness to a country without universal healthcare? Not considering these things could cost your company more than you can afford, so it’s important to dig deep and think of even what you’d personally consider the very minor. What is an afterthought to you could be a dealbreaker for your employee.
